Make sure that the degree is certified by the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). The next steps to becoming a professional in health and safety department is getting your license. Before getting the license you have to be approved by ABET, you even complete the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam that will situate you as an engineer in training (EIT). As an engineer in training you are required to get enough practice for four years for you to become a professional engineer which you are awarded after passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering course. Ensure that you get on-site occupational health and safety training workshops that help you to keep updated on the current trends in safety management.
Another key step is getting authorization needed. It is important that you get the certificate of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) which is provided to licensed engineers. Or you may opt for the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) that is from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. These certificates are renewed after five years.

As a professional engineer you get to practice and get to work in this field, however you can aim even higher and work for a masters degree.
